Welcome to The Hawthorn Minibar and Lounge, where history meets libations. Our name is inspired by the hawthorn tree, an ancient symbol of love, hope, strength, and protection. Just as the hawthorn has stood witness to centuries of lore, our establishment shares a rich past, narrating history through tangible craftsmanship. Created with meticulous care and a touch of the divine, The Hawthorn is a testament to the artistry of the ages.
The oak bar top, salvaged from the church pews of a Charleston sanctuary, carries the echoes of hymns and prayers. The facing of the bar conveys another transformation, with altarpieces from St. Joseph's in Athens reborn into a new life in Savannah.
Pre-Raphaelite stained glass windows, dating back to approximately the 1870s, have been lovingly restored by a local artist, preserving not just the glass but the spirit of a bygone era when hand-blown glass was carefully painted, fired, and assembled in tribute to a higher power.
The wainscoting that surrounds our space whispers stories of a century spent beneath oiled machines in a North Carolina textile mill, evidenced by each groove and stain, bearing witness to the labors of those who worked there, a tactile connection to a bygone industrial age.
The large old-growth pine beams that compose the back bar and cocktail shelves have been reclaimed from a deconstructed building on Lincoln Street. The enormous pines from which they originate once towered over coastal hammocks, perhaps having begun life as early as the 1500s. They now stand as guardians of the past, anchoring our space with the weight of centuries.
A showcase proudly displays a Knights Templar parade outfit from the early 1900s, a nod to the mysteries of secret societies, ancient ceremonies, and old-world charm.
At The Hawthorn Minibar and Lounge, we invite you to savor not just what's in your glass, but the rich history that surrounds you. Step into a world where each sip is steeped in tradition, and every corner holds a tale waiting to be discovered. Cheers! To you, to The Hawthorn, to Savannah, and to the timeless allure of History as we make new tales together.
